Social Work Essay A career in social work gets people involved the community and the world. Social work is a profession that helps to improve problems faced in society in order to make it better and more civilized. Going into this project I knew all of the common and most basic information about social work. But, as I began to research more on the profession if social work, I learned more than I actually thought I knew. Social work is a great profession that involves people helping people and improving the lives of people all over the world. Making a difference in another person’s life was a huge attraction from social work to me. I have always been the type of person who has a genuine love for helping others. I get great joy out of it and it makes me feel rewarding. I truly believed that my love for helping others was my life’s purpose. The only difficulty I had was figuring out the right career that would allow me to fulfill my purpose. As freshman in high school is where I began my search for the perfect career. I took the time out for two summer’s straight and attended something similar to job shadowing with family members who currently held profession that involved helping people. This is when I was introduced to the field of social work. Even though there were other career fields that would fit my purpose, social work was the only career I felt was just right for me. I felt that social work was the right field for because it fitted my personality perfectly and not only did I want to help people hands on, I also wanted to be able to go outside of my office and help as well. Social work was the field that would allow me to do so. The profession itself is not as stressful compared to the medical professions. Social work professions involve face-to-face communication that is not as intense as other face-to-face conditions. While looking further in to the career that am attempting to pursue, I have gained a lot of knowledge from research and interviews which have inspired me even more to continue to strive for a career in the field of social work. Through my research I found many things from scholarly journals that interest me. I earned from the â€Å"Reevaluation of social work student’s career† study, conducted by researchers Rubin and Johnson, that most students are committed and devoted to the basics in a career of social work. Most of them also plan to open up their own private practice 5 years after graduation (Butler 45). The purpose of the study was to find out how committed master degree students were to a career in social work (Butler 45). Majority of the students wanted to hold positions in social work that did not involve having clients who were disabled in anyway. Students within a few years after graduation planned to go into private practice with social work (Butler 47). I also discovered from the social work of education journal that the instruction of multicultural content in social work classes causes a discomfort amongst professors, other faculty and students (Social work education 251-253). It is a discomfort especially for minority students that are attending schools of social work (Social work education 254-256). Most try to avoid the multiculturalism content when educating or being educated with the study of social work because most fear that the discussion on that particular topic will be blown out of proportion and will cause a huge disagreement (Social work education 254-256). I learned through interviews with social workers, Mr. Charles Blakely and Reava Lipson that the pay that comes with social workers may not be what I want in salary but it is worth it because it reminds me that I make a difference I other people lives so that they may be as successful as me. Overall I have learned from this entire project that you have to first be passionate about the career you plan to take on and secondly stay focused and devoted. Social work is not just a profession that helps other but it I also a profession that gives social workers the opportunity to help themselves through someone else’s problem. Social work is something like a projector that reveals what really goes on in societies all over the world. Social work is a career that many have chosen and are still choosing. Social work deals the change of individuals and the changes in society. I am determined to make a difference in someone else’s life in the field of social work.

The music video that I chose to write my paper on, is called "Date Rape" and it is performed by Sublime. I've seen the video plenty of times and I taped it back in 1993 when I first got their album 40 oz. to Freedom. The song is about a man that picks up a lady in a bar and rapes her. He winds up going to court and the judge finds that, "he was full of shit, and he gave him twenty-five years." Then it talks about the man going to jail and even getting "butt raped by a large inmate." The video is much like a movie in the way that it is displayed. As the song goes on and on the video accompanies the lyrics by showing what the man looked like (which in the song was with "a double chin and a plastic smile"). At the beginning, the video shows the man go into the bar and getting the attention of the lady. He convinces her to take a ride in his van and forces her to succumb to his will by saying, "if it wasn't for date rape I'd never get laid." After he is finished he lets her out and she files a police report and then "she took the guy's ass to court." She goes to court and low and behold, the judge is the great Ron Jeremy (of porn fame). Ron sentences the man to twenty-five years of imprisonment and later it shows a depiction of the guy being raped in prison. The video says a great deal for women and actually won a couple of awards for their "anti-rape message." Although Sublime's lead singer, Brad, claims that it was just a song he wrote when he was high, it received a rather large acceptance by many women's groups. The video sends this message out to the viewer as well. Parental Influence on Childrens Socialization Gender Roles Essay

The article Parental Influence on Children’s Socialization to Gender Roles by Susan D. Witt is about gender socialization and the primary role parent’s play. She states that children learn at an early age what it means to be a boy or girl. Witt states that it is different for a child to grow and not experience some sort of gender bias. The basic expectation during a child’s primary development is socialization that comes about through parents influence. Witt states that a child’s earliest exposure to what it means to be male or female comes from parents. An earliest exposure would be a parent dressing the child in gender specific colors such as pink for girls and blue for boys. Another early exposure to gender socialization would be gender differentiated toys such as dolls for girls and trucks for boys. Children internalize parental messages regarding gender at an early age (Witt, Susan D. 1997). In Witt’s article she states that one study found that children at age two and a half use gender stereotypes in negotiating their world. In a 1992 article by Steinbacher and Holmes it stated that most parents prefer male children throughout the world ad that these people are most likely to use technology for selecting sex of a child this is defiantly a form of gender bias. Parents often encourage their children, both sons and daughters to participate in gender type activities (Witt, Susan D. 1997), such as cooking for girls or playing with trucks for boys. Both parental sex typing is shown in children’s toy preferences and both mother and father have been found to reinforce stereotypes however, fathers have been shown to reinforce these stereotypes more. Children’s bedrooms have shown they are more so than not gender specific. Such as, girls rooms having more pink, dolls and manipulative toys and boys rooms having more blue, tools or sports related themes (Witt, Susan D. 1997). Research has shown that a parent’s influence is a primary socialization tool in a child’s development however, Some studies have suggested that parents as a gender socialization factor have little impact on a child’s sex role development (Witt, Susan D. 1997). Studies have shown that parents treat sons and daughters differently and that this plays a role into adult relationships. Witt states that parental attributes towards their children have a strong impact on their development and self-esteem. Sex role stereotypes are established in early childhood. It is shown that messages about appropriate behavior are based on gender, there are some benefits to strict gender stereotypes such as providing a sense of security and to facilitate decision making (Witt, Susan D. 1997). Witt states a negative factor to gender stereotyping and socialization would be limiting opportunities for both boys and girls based on what is seen to be gender appropriate in society. She also states that androgynous (neutral) individuals have been found to have higher self-esteem and higher levels of identity achievement and more flexibility in dating and relationships. Witt also states that children with parents who have more neutral values tend to be more knowledgeable about non sex type objects and occupations. Families who look at situations with less gender specific roles have been found to score highest in parental warmth and support (Witt, Susan D. 1997). Because of the strong influence of parents regarding gender role socialization those which were to be gender fair and encourage the best in both their sons and/or daughters would do well to adapt to genderless role orientation and encourage the same in their children (Witt, Susan D, 1997). Witt’s article shows her view and others of gender socialization and how it plays a role in a child’s upbringing.
